In the end, the guests pretty much dry up by seven thirty, so we take the opportunity to tidy up and wipe down the trailer early and I’m ready to go by half past eight. Jamie gives me the address of his flat for my satnav in case we get separated, which turns out to be a good thing because we’re only about two turnings away from the dealership before I completely forget which car I’m supposed to be following. My mind is preoccupied with trying to work out how I feel about having Jamie in my home. I’m also trying to remember whether I have any laundry drying on the radiators; the last thing I want is for Jamie’s first impression to be a sea of knickers and bras. We might just be friends, but I’m still anxious to make a good impression. When I pull up outside his block, he’s already parked up and is waiting for me, cradling the bottle in the crook of his arm and talking into his phone. He holds up two fingers to indicate that he’s nearly done. Whatever the call is about, it seems serious, as he’s frowning slightly.

‘Sorry about that. Family issue,’ he tells me as he climbs in and fastens his seatbelt. ‘How’s the car?’

‘Very nice, thank you.’

‘Have you tried out the four-wheel drive yet?’

‘No, but Ian showed me how to work it, and I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before I need to get out of a muddy field.’

‘That reminds me, we’re doing a track and field day at Brands Hatch in October, and Gerald asked me to ask you if you could do a lunch for the punters. It’s a Saturday.’

‘What’s a track and field day?’

‘Basically, we invite all the people who have bought cars from us in the last year, or who have ordered and are waiting for delivery, to come to Brands Hatch to get an idea of what the vehicles can really do. So we have some sports cars on the track, and there’s an off-road course to demonstrate the Land Rovers. It’s all sponsored by the manufacturer; they send the cars and instructors along with various goodies for us to give away. Gerald would like you to do the lunch.’

‘But isn’t there a restaurant there already?’

‘We normally book one of the hospitality suites, but we aren’t going to be the only people there. We share the day with other manufacturers, taking turns on the track and so on, so a couple of groups have to organise their own lunch. Gerald isn’t generally a fan of that – he thinks having one of the hospitality suites gives a better impression – but he’s got this bee in his bonnet about you doing something with a British theme to champion the British cars, see?’

‘Give me the date and I’ll check my diary. What do you need in terms of drinks?’

‘We won’t be serving alcohol, obviously, because they’ll be driving. So, sparkling water, maybe some flavoured stuff, and tea and coffee at regular intervals.
